Expand your EMDR practice with practical, compassionate, and clinically grounded strategies for supporting individuals living with dementia and the caregivers who walk alongside them.
In this live, virtual workshop, EMDR therapist, Thanatologist and End-of-Life Doula Carla Archuletta will share best practices on adapting EMDR for clients whose memory, communication, and cognition are changing. All while staying faithful to the AIP model.
“As our population ages, EMDR clinicians will increasingly encounter clients living with dementia and caregivers experiencing trauma, anticipatory grief, and chronic stress. I created this training to help clinicians feel more confident applying EMDR with these populations by bringing together emerging research, practical adaptations, and real-world clinical experience.” Carla Archuletta, LPC/MHSP-S, FT
EMDR with Dementia and Caregivers: Clinical Adaptations, Case Conceptualization, and Ethical Practice
is an advanced 3.5 CE training designed for EMDR-trained clinicians seeking practical guidance for working with this complex population and those who care for them.
Bridging EMDR Practice and Clinical Adaptation:
This training explores how the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and EMDR protocol can inform work with neurocognitive decline and caregiver distress. Participants will examine how dementia impacts memory systems while recognizing the continued accessibility of implicit and emotionally encoded memories.
Clinicians will learn strategies for adapting pacing, target selection, and interventions based on client capacity, cognitive functioning, readiness, and stability. The course also addresses caregiver trauma, anticipatory grief, and burnout through EMDR-informed approaches.
Practical and Ethical Clinical Applications:
Participants will explore brief EMDR-informed interventions, including adaptations of On-the-Spot EMDR, for situations where standard reprocessing may not be appropriate due to cognitive or communication limitations.
The training also covers ethical decision-making, contraindications, scope of practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration to support thoughtful clinical care.
Meet Your Presenter:
The course is led by Carla Archuletta, LPC/MHSP-S, FT, an EMDR Certified Therapist, EMDRIA Consultant-in-Training, Facilitator for EMDR Basic Training, Fellow in Thanatology, and trained end-of-life doula. With experience in trauma treatment, hospice care, grief, and serious illness, Carla brings a unique perspective to this emerging area of EMDR practice. She is also an instructor in the University of Vermont’s End-of-Life Doula Professional Certificate Program, a national speaker, and co-author of Health-Medical Challenges and Grief: Group EMDR Therapy for Patients and Caregivers in EMDR Group Therapy: Emerging Principles and Protocols to Treat Trauma and Beyond (Springer Publishing)
Who Should Attend?
This advanced course is for clinicians who have completed foundational EMDR Therapy training and are familiar with the AIP model, eight-phase protocol, and three-pronged approach. The focus is on adapting existing EMDR skills rather than teaching basic EMDR procedures.
